CONFERENCE CANCELLED DUE TO COVID19

After consulting with the School District 57 and making use of the best information we have from BC Health Authorities, and in response to today's BC Government announcements regarding K-12, we have decided to cancel the April 24th 2020 Educational Spring Fling Conference (PGSS, Prince George) in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The organizers really appreciate the work that our presenters have done to design and prepare diverse and meaningful professional learning for this event.  We have received many remarks about the astounding choices among our 87 workshops and excitement to hear from our keynote Monique Gray Smith.  We also appreciate the planning and time invested by many people in arranging travel, securing release from various districts, ordering and resource allocation by exhibitors, catering work, etc.  This event is months in the making and I'm sure many folks will be disappointed with the cancellation.  But... public health!

Exhbitors and Registrants who have paid fees can be issues refunds through our EasyReg registration system.

Presenters who are out-of-pocket should consider submitting an Expense Form.  For example, you may wish to claim flight cancellation fees (receipt required).  Submit these to Glen Thielmann c/o PGDTA, 101-1968 Queensway St, Prince George BC, V2L 1M2 or emailed to gthielmann [AT] sd57.bc.ca.

WHY: There's something for everyone and everyone is welcome.  Beyond providing one-off professional development workshops, we have built a program that emphasizes connections between educators, and connections to the ongoing inquiry that occurs in classrooms and schools. Benchmarks, not destinations.

WHO: The Spring Fling is for educators in SD57 (Prince George), SD28 (Quesnel), SD91 (Nechako Lakes), SD27 (Caribou-Chilcotin) plus other educational professionals, advocates, specialists, assistants, and community members from Prince George and beyond. This conference is the result of the cooperative efforts from the PD Chairs and their committees from the following BCTF "North Central Zone" locals: Prince George (57), Quesnel (28), Nechako (56), and Burns Lake (55), with advice from Caribou-Chilcotin (27). Thanks also to contributions from CUPE local 3742 and the local chapter of BCPVPA -- the Prince George Principals' and Vice-Principals' Association.

WHERE: Prince George Secondary School (PGSS) -- map.  PGSS sits on the unceded traditional territory of the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation: "this name translates as 'people from where the rivers flow together.' The rivers spoken of are the Nee Incha Koh which means 'river with strong undercurrents' and the Ltha Koh, the Big Mouth River. These rivers are known as the Nechako and the Fraser" (source: lheidli.ca).

WHAT: discussion and presentation on diverse topics, themes, and issues packed into one day, with plenty of time for networking and professional conversation in between. We encourage use of the hashtag #edfling during the conference to communicate professional learning and celebrate the work of educators. You can also add your district #sd57, #sd91, #sd28, or #sd29 as well as #bctf or #bced in order to invite wider dialogue.

Conference Registration: opens first thing in March -- see the WORKSHOPS and REGISTRATION links above to preview sessions and sign up. We are using a new registration system this year -- please report any anomalies to the conference coordinator.

Conference Fees:
  • BCTF members (including TTOCs) in sponsoring districts (SD27, SD28, SD57, SD91 locals 55 & 56): free ($50 fee covered by your PD Funds)
  • Administrators, EAs, education professionals & support staff, AbEd Dep't, student teachers, PAC & DPAC members, trustees in SD57: free
